At South Christian, we provide struggling students with Response to Intervention (RTI), which is a multi-tiered approach to the early identification and support of students with academic and behavior needs.

The RTI process begins with high-quality instruction and universal screening in the classroom. Struggling learners are provided with interventions to accelerate their learning. Progress is closely monitored to assess learning; progress is communicated with parents.


Below is the letter sent home to notify parents about the RTI at South Christian, along with the different supports offered at our school.

To the Parents of ___________________________________________,


            In order to provide the most effective education for your child, South Christian Elementary School has implemented Response to Intervention (RTI). This intervention program uses a three tier approach which includes varied levels of support to ensure that your child is successful. In Tier 1, the classroom teacher will use the same strategies with your child that he/she uses with the entire class. If your child is struggling to master the skill taught, then the teacher designs additional strategies above and beyond what she is already doing with the entire class. These additional strategies hopefully will close the gap in understanding so that your child can learn and master the taught skill. These additional strategies are considered Tier 2. If your child continues to need additional support that is more intensive than what Tier 2 is providing, then your child will be placed in a Tier 3. A staff member other than the teacher may give tier 3 supports. They may occur more often and for longer periods of time. The hope and intention is that your child can benefit from the additional support and eventually return to Tier 1 where all students in the class receive the same strategies in order to master the taught skills. Your child’s teacher meets with the grade level team weekly and the Response to Intervention Team monthly to review student progress.

            South Christian welcomes your input as a parent and would like for you to make suggestions that may improve your child’s academics or behavior. We want you to be a part of creating your child’s educational plan.
